Last week marked the end of an era for one of our remarkable young people as he moves on from residential care and into his very own tenancy.

Over five years ago, he arrived at our service as a quiet, shy, and timid 15-year-old who was unsure of what the future might hold. Like many young people entering care, he faced challenges and uncertainty, but throughout his journey he demonstrated resilience, determination, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching him grow into a polite, caring, and respectful young man. He has worked hard to achieve his goals, securing a place at university, gaining part-time employment, and developing the skills and confidence needed to live independently.

Last week, he reached another significant milestone by moving into his own tenancy. This achievement reflects not only his hard work and commitment, but also the personal growth, independence, and maturity he has shown throughout his time with us.

While it is always bittersweet to say goodbye to a young person who has been part of our home for so many years, moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Seeing young people leave our care with the confidence, skills, and ambition to build successful futures is the greatest measure of success.

We are incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished and of the inspiring young man he has become. As he begins this exciting new chapter, we wish him happiness, success, and every opportunity to achieve his dreams.

Supporting children and young people in residential care is one of the most meaningful and complex responsibilities any team can take on. Young people often arrive with rich inner worlds but limited ways to express them. Some have experienced trauma, some have additional support needs, and others simply haven’t yet found the confidence or language to communicate openly.

This is where communication‑friendly tools and aids become transformative. They don’t just make life easier—they open doors to connection, safety, and belonging.

Fidget items, weighted blankets, or quiet spaces help children regulate their emotions so they can communicate more effectively.

🔹 Plain‑language and Trauma‑informed Communication

Staff using simple, consistent language—and being mindful of tone and body language—creates an environment where children feel safe enough to speak.

Every so often, we meet a young person whose journey reminds us exactly why we do the work we do. Over the past five years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting a remarkable young man whose determination, resilience, and kindness have shaped him into the confident, capable adult he is today.

When he first joined us, he carried huge potential—potential that simply needed the right support, encouragement, and environment to shine. Watching him grow has been nothing short of inspiring.

A Milestone Moment: Graduating from School

One of the first major achievements in his journey was successfully graduating from school. This milestone represented far more than academic accomplishment—it reflected years of effort, perseverance, and a growing belief in himself. We were proud then, and continue to be proud now, of the dedication he showed to his learning and personal development.

Taking the Next Step: University Acceptance

His hard work paid off when he was accepted into university, a moment filled with excitement, hope, and well-earned celebration. University can be a challenging transition for any young person, but he embraced it with maturity and determination. He is currently still studying, building his future one step at a time, and proving every day that he is capable of achieving his dreams.

Balancing Academics and Work

What makes his story even more impressive is his ability to balance university life with a part-time job in hospitality. Managing both academic responsibilities and employment is no small achievement. It takes commitment, discipline, and resilience—qualities he has shown throughout his time with us.

His success in maintaining steady work while studying highlights not only his strong work ethic but also his growing independence. He has taken every challenge in stride and continues to set a powerful example of what young people can accomplish with dedication and the right support.

Today, he is a strong, independent, caring, and empathetic young man. He treats others with kindness, approaches life with responsibility, and carries himself with integrity. We could not be prouder of the person he has become.
